Biography

Viktor is is a central character in both Suikoden I and Suikoden II, as well as appearing in Suikogaiden Volume 1. A wandering swordsman and mercenary with a jocular and easy-going personality, Viktor harbours a deep enmity for the vampire Neclord. He is also good friends with fellow traveller Flik

The Early Days

Viktor was born in the year 429 in the small town of North Window in what was then the City-States of Jowston. In the year 447, the North Window 4th Company took part in the Jowston invasion of the Scarlet Moon Empire.
Viktor's father died during the war, leaving the teenage Viktor to look after his mother alone. It was around this time that Viktor fell in love with Daisy, a young war orphan who lived with his family.

Devastation

Two years later, while Viktor was buying medicine for his grandmother, Martha, in nearby South Window, the vampire Neclord destroyed the village - killing the inhabitants and reanimating the corpses as zombies. When Viktor returned to the town, he was forced to fight off his friends and family with his sword before confronting Neclord. Viktor fought Neclord but could not land a blow, he was struck and left for dead and if not for the Sacrificial Buddha that Daisy had given to him, he would have died. Viktor searched the ruins of North Window for Daisy but she was already dead. She had committed suicide thinking Viktor dead. Viktor was rescued by those who arrived from Kuskus. He was taken to Kuskus at death's door and nursed by Barbara, who was also from North Window. Viktor healed fast and took off immediately to search for the object of his vengeance.

Service to Jowston

Rumors began to spread that Two River attacked North Window and there was a real risk of war between the two City-States. Anabelle, the then-vice-mayor of Muse, entered South Window with Viktor to investigate the incident. The two, with the help of Zamji, uncovered a plot by South Window weapons merchants to spread rumors to cause war. They captured the merchants, seized proof, and managed to stop Two River and South Window from entering war.[1]

Service in the Toran Liberation Army

After this, Viktor made his way through the Badlands separating the Toran and Dunan regions alone, an unprecedented feat even for a swordsman such as Viktor. Over the years, he ran into many adventures which honed his instinct for survival and his rogue-like tendencies. In 453 at the Scarlet Moon Empire, Viktor joined the Toran Liberation Army; however, his Jowston-origin as well as his maverick attitude meant that he was rarely trusted with important matters. Over the next two years, Viktor proved his loyalty and became an important member of the rebel organization.
The year 455 saw Viktor travel to Gregminster after hearing rumours that Tir McDohl, son of the Great Imperial General Teo McDohl, had become a wanted fugitive. Helping Tir and his entourage escape Imperial capture, Viktor brought them to Liberation Army Headquarters in Lenankamp. It was Viktor who enabled Tir to free the captured bandits, Varkas and Sydonia, from Imperial torture. Later, when the hideout at Lenankamp was sacked, it was Viktor who helped the party cross the border into Gouran using the alias of his childhood hero.

An Old Enemy Reappears

Once the new Liberation Army was established on the castle at Lake Toran, Viktor became an important figure and general for the force. In early 456, on an excursion to Lorimar, the Liberation Army encountered Neclord, the vampire that had destroyed North Window some years previous. It turned out that Neclord was impervious to regular attacks and so the legendary Zodiac Sword (Star Dragon Sword) was needed to counteract Neclord's magic.
Journeying to Qlon Temple, Viktor and his comrades convinced the sentient Star Dragon Sword to join them in their fight following a brief excursion 300 years into the past after Viktor made a faux pas in the sword's presence. Viktor was the one chosen to handle the runic sword and thus delivered the blow that felled the vampire atop his castle in Lorimar. After Neclord was defeated, Viktor left the Liberation Army for a time to journey to North Window, intending to let the people who perished know that Neclord had at last met his end.
While returning to the Liberation Army, Viktor stopped in Senan along the way, to pay a visit to a friend and Liberation Army sympathiser, Warren. Unfortunately, however, the two men were soon captured by Imperial forces and imprisoned in Moravia Castle. Warren's servant, Taggart, managed to escape and tell the Liberation Army of this event and a stratagem devised by Liberation Army Strategist, Mathiu Silverberg, allowed the army to free Viktor and Warren as well as forcing the surrender of Senan governor, Kasim Hazil.

Viktor's Character

Viktor may have an irreverent nature born of his experiences, but can also carry a heavy heart. He was unable to forgive himself for a while after the death of Odessa Silverberg, whom he was charged with protecting. His condemnation by Odessa's lover and fellow Liberation Army member, Flik, only served to increase his grief. However, his burden in that regard was lightened when Flik forgave Viktor, citing Odessa's willingness to die for her cause.
Sometimes rash, following the death of Gremio, Viktor advocated the execution of Milich Oppenheimer for his role in the murder, despite evidence that Milich had been under the influence of a Black Rune at the time. It was several months before Viktor's feelings of hatred towards the former Imperial General subsided. Over the course of the Liberation War, Viktor and Flik's relationship grew into of unspoken respect and friendship, best demonstrated when fleeing the collapsing Gregminster Palace, both Viktor and Flik stayed behind in order to fight off Imperial forces bent on avenging Emperor Barbarossa's apparent death, allowing Tir McDohl to escape.

Mercenary Leader

After the war, Viktor and Flik's bodies were not found inside the palace (which had not collapsed after all) and it was assumed they had escaped from the castle. In fact, Viktor and Flik traversed the Badlands, Viktor's second journey, and arrived in Jowston. Old friend, Anabelle, now Mayor of Muse, requested that Viktor form a mercenary regiment in East Muse in order to give the region some protection. Viktor readily agreed and with Flik as his second-in-command (but, in reality, more of a co-commander) had a fortress built in East Muse, allied with Jowston in order to protect the region from potential Highland aggression.
Sometime prior to 460, Viktor grew increasingly tired of the indignant Star Dragon Sword and eventually sealed it within the Cave of the Wind in South Window Principality. In 460, it's revealed that Viktor was charged with letting their old friends in the new Toran Republic know of their survival but it seemed that Viktor simply forgot to do so during the past three years.
While Viktor tends to act rashly, he can also plan ahead. It was Viktor who procured a collection of Fire Spears after the Toran Liberation War and brought them to Jowston. Viktor and Flik led the defense of East Muse in 460, however, another faucet of Viktor's personality, his carelessness, led, in part, to their defeat when it turned out that the Fire Spears had rusted over, limiting their use. Around this period it is revealed that Viktor had an unrequited crush on Anabelle, Mayor of Muse. It is also revealed that Viktor is very fond of Kanakan wine.
Later, the remnants of Viktor's mercenary army managed to deflect the initial Highland attack on Muse City, however, a surprise night attack on the city forced the army to disband and flee from the region.

An Old Enemy Reappears... Again

Viktor eventually made his way to South Window City, he and the remnants of his force being hired by South Window to investigate the ruins of North Window where a series of attacks on young women had taken place.
Once there, Viktor was horrified to discover that Neclord was alive and responsible for these attacks. Once again, Viktor and his allies could not harm the runic vampire. And so, Viktor was forced to journey back to the Cave of the Winds to use the Star Dragon Sword once again. It was there that he first met the Vampire Hunter, Kahn Marley who also wished to use the sword to destory Neclord. Forming an alliance the group met with the Star Dragon Sword, who, irate at the lack of respect shown to him by Viktor, attacked the group. After Viktor placated the sword with some well-placed (and fake) pleading, the sword agreed to aid him once more.
Marley revealed to Viktor that Neclord survived due to his 'Doppelganger Secret' which created a replica of his body. It was this that Viktor had destroyed in Lorimar three years prior. Marley agreed to use a technique developed by his family to seal Neclord's spirit, allowing the Star Dragon Sword to destroy the vampire forever. However, before this could be accomplished, Neclord managed to flee North Window after unsuccessfully failing to convince Viktor to hand over the Star Dragon Sword in exchange for his former girlfriend Daisy. Viktor was momentarily taken aback upon seeing his lost love but after reminding himself that Daisy was gone, Viktor felled the impostor. Neclord fled the scene, leaving the Abomination to clean up the mess, but Viktor and his companions disposed of it as well.
Viktor fought in the Dunan Unification War as an important general as well as a valued advisor and friend of Riou, the leader of the Allied Army. Viktor originally encountered Riou in early 460 washed up near Toto Village. As Riou was a Highlander, Viktor was forced to place him in custody but still came to his aid following his escape and capture by Highland forces. After that, Riou became a member of Viktor's mercenary forces.
Viktor accompanied Riou and company to Tinto when the former City-State sent a request for an alliance following the appearance of Neclord in the region. Despite their best efforts, the region fell to Neclord who had planned to form a kingdom of zombies in the area. Neclord's plans were undone however when the vampire Sierra Mikain, whom he had crossed centuries earlier, allied herself with Kahn Marley and Viktor, allowing Neclord to be defeated and his soul destroyed once and for all.

A New Journey

His life's journey complete at last, Viktor continued to serve the Allied Army until the war's end. Following the conclusion of the war, he and Flik left once more on a journey.
Their journey eventually brought them to a village being attacked by vampires. They met a young man named Edge, whose sister had been taken away by the vampires. They helped battle the attackers, during which Edge told Viktor he wanted to be a great swordsman. In response, Viktor lent him the Star Dragon Sword to use, which Edge used to destroy the head vampire. However, Viktor didn't ask for the sword back, and he left with Flik to go help fight Harmonia in the Higheast Rebellion. After that, it is assumed that Viktor resumed his journey along with Flik.
